Blue Fulmar - Amble, Northumberland

On a pelagic on Thursday the 4th we had a Blue Fulmar, I was sure it was a Blue Fulmar at the paler end of the scale but wanted to be sure. So after a quick enquiry to Martin Garner who I knew had seen them high up in Arctic Norway it was confirmed by Martin it was indeed a Blue Fulmar.

I had never seen this "form" of Fulmar before. After some research I discovered that they are very variable and you get birds at both ends of the scale; some look very much like "normal" Fulmars and others are far more darker as you go along the scale, like the bird below taken by Mark Newsome in County Durham:

Until next time, Foghorn out!
