Lesser & Mealy Repoll ID

I very helpful, easy to understand, and concise paper has been put together on how to separate Lesser and Mealy Redpoll.

Plenty of images used throughout of typical individuals as well as the trickier birds.

The paper is published by Lee Evans and can be found here:

Here is a list of other Repoll literature which deals with the separation of Lesser and Mealy Redpoll: - Looks good, haven't read it yet as of updating this post. - For thoose who subscrbe to BirdGuides.

Until next time, Foghorn out!

  1. 'Ere, Foggy, never mind Mealy vs Lesser (Harry Hill knows how to separate them), what about a Coues' Arctic Redpoll as per Birdguides today? I am sure someone's 'avin' a larf!!!!

  2. Hi The Milly of G, I haven't even tried with the separation of the races of Arctic Redpoll! Get my Common/Mealy/Greenland and Lesser Redpoll's sorted out first lol

  3. Though I am interested to move onto the races of Arctic Redpoll. Perhaps over Christmas.

  4. I'd just be happy to see a redpoll tbh, gotta be some out there somewhere surely !

When faced with a flock of them big pale redpolls you do become obsessed with undertail coverts and ageing !! I once spent a whole week just looking at undertail coverts, rumps and flank streaking on a flock of redpolls on my old local patch, and it was absolutely BRILLIANT !!

Just thinking about it makes me desperate for a large flock of mealies to appear..... 8)
